Changing Patterns of Peoples’ Participation Among Fishing Community in Dakshina Kannada

Dr. B. Shivarama Shetty, Mangalore University

The report is about the influence of changing times on a particular community. Here the case of fishing community in Dakshina Kannada is taken up as a case study. Dr. Shetty links this aspect with the peoples’ participation within the community. He shows in his report how in the past people used to participate in the community activities by themselves and found solutions to their problems. But with the changing times and influence of globalisation there is not much of civil society activities within the community. The fishing community, that is, Mogaveera community here is no more living in unison. It is all divided and younger generation has moved out of the community in search of better prospects. Because they are divided, there is no teeth in their struggle against the hostile forces. Political parties have used this situation for their own benefits. Overall this report provides a detail picture of how a community, especially peoples’ participation within the community is affected by the changing times, more so in the background of globalisation and the market driven life style.
